Horse racing in Mauritius is run by the Mauritius Turf Club (MTC). All race meetings are held at the Champ de Mars track in Port Louis, which is the oldest racetrack in the southern hemisphere.
The horse racing season in Mauritius runs from the end of March to the first weekend of December with just one weekends break mid-season. Race meetings are held every Saturday and occasionally on Sundays.
There are 4 ‘classic’ races throughout the season and 4 ‘semi-classics. The season finishes with the international jockey weekend where some of the best jockeys from around the world come to ride for the weekend.
In addition to the Forbach Stables club, which homes retired horses and works with them so they can spend a second career as riding horses, the proprietors have horses in race training. These horses divide their time between training and racing in Port Louis and resting and pre-training at Forbach. Using this mixed environment approach we aim to limit the physical and psychological stress that a competition environment can place on a horse and maximize not only the horse’s performance but its performance life-span. The horses will then remain at Forbach as part of the TheForbach Stables club upon their eventual retirement.
