Welcome to Mauritius!

Whether you are planning your holiday to Mauritius, or you have already arrived, if you are considering a horse riding excursion during your stay then you've come to the right place! The Forbach Stables is located in a small village called Esperance Trebuchet, we are about a 15-20minute drive from the north-coast towns of GrandBaie and Pereybere and about 30minutes from the capital Port Louis. We are in an agricultural area surrounded by sugar cane plantations, we offer a variety of horse riding trips to suit all abilities.

1-hour trail ride:

Upon arrival you will meet your horse and our welcoming staff. Novice riders will be taught how to mount their horse and will be given basic tuition on how to control their horse. You will set out from The Forbach Stables and onto the surrounding agricultural land where you will usually see villagers at work growing the exotic fruits and vegetables for sale in the markets throughout the island. Eventually the small plots of land give way to vast areas of sugar cane plantation and the hilly landscape gives rise to splendid views over the mountain ranges. After 1 hour you will return back to The Forbach Stables where you can spend more time with the horses and enjoy a refreshing drink. This ride is suitable for all levels of riding ability, inexperienced riders will be accompanied by a guide on foot whereas more experienced riders will be accompanied by a guide on horse-back.

2-hour trail ride:

Similar to our 1-hour trail rides but designed for experienced riders wishing to cover more ground and go out deeper into the countryside exploring the maze-like paths winding around the sugar cane. Riders on 2-hour trails must be capable of controlling a horse at canter and able to ride on undulating ground.

Riding Lessons:

1-hour riding lessons can be tailor made for all abilities, whether you have never sat on a horse before and want to learn all the basics or whether you are a competent rider wanting to improve your jumping or flatwork we can accommodate your needs. We have an outside sand-based fenced area (20x60m) in which all lessons take place against a peaceful backdrop so you can learn at a speed that suits you in a relaxing environment. Lessons can also arranged on our canter-track for more established riders. Packages of lessons can be booked at discounted rates if pre-paid.

Beach Rides:

An experience of a lifetime – our beach rides are along one of the most breathtaking beaches in Mauritius. When I first came to Mauritius I was happy just to be standing on this beach, it really felt like paradise, now, several years later, it's a great pleasure to be able to ride along these long stretches of white sand and turquoise sea. We arrange your transport to the beach where your beautiful Thoroughbred horses will be waiting for you. Novice riders are then accompanied by a guide on foot while more experienced riders can enjoy long canters through the sand and shallow waters with an experienced guide riding alongside. (Beach rides can be arranged for adults and children 10yrs old and upwards; minimum 2 persons).

1-Day Package:

Our one day horsemanship packages can be arranged Tuesday to Friday and can be arranged for adults and children 10yrs old and upwards (minimum 2 persons). Arrive at our stables in the morning, meet your horse and our staff who will be with you throughout the day to help you and answer any questions you may have. Start the day with a horse riding lesson in our enclosed sand arena, specially tailored to your level of horse riding experience. You will then set out on a 1hour trail ride exploring the local area on horse-back, this takes you out through local agricultural land and onto the sugar cane plantations, during your ride you will get a good feel for rural life in Mauritius and enjoy beautiful views of the Mauritian countryside.

Upon returning to The Forbach Stables relax with a refreshing drink, you will be provided with a Mauritian lunch (dietary requirements can be catered for with notice), we also have shower and changing facilities for you to use.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to spend some time learning how to care for the horses before being taken to the beach for a ride along the stunning East coast. Upon arrival at the beach your horses will be waiting for you and you will set off with an experienced guide enjoying the tranquility of the end of the day. You will then be brought back to The Forbach Stables ready for your return to your hotel.

Holiday Package:

Our holiday package is an equestrian based holiday which allows you to indulge in your passion of horses while also exploring the island of Mauritius. The package can be flexible to meet your requirements and fit into the days you are visiting the island. Activities on offer include: trail rides, riding lessons, beach rides, trip to watch horse racing, stable management sessions. Please let me know what dates you are visiting Mauritius and what activities you would like to participate in so I can provide an itinerary and price.

How to get here

We can arrange a pick-up/drop-off service from your hotel. This service can be provided from hotels at the following tariffs:

Trou aux Biches/Mont Choisy/Grand Baie/Pereybere/Cap Malheureux/Grand Gaube: Rs 1000 for 1-2 persons or Rs 1200 for 3-4 persons.
East Coast: Poste de Flacq, Belle Mare, Trou d'Eau Douce: Rs : 1200 for 1-2 persons or Rs 1400 for 3-4 persons.
North West Coast and Port Louis: Pointe aux Biches, Poine aux Piments, Balaclava, Port Louis: Rs 1200 for 1-2persons or Rs 1400 for 3-4 persons.

When are we open?

Please contact us to make an appointment, we are open Tuesday-Sunday, riding times can be flexible to meet your requirements.

What to Wear?

On your feet: ideally a closed boot with a small flat heal, failing this, closed shoes such as trainers will be sufficient, but please do not come wearing sandals/flip-flops, you will not be able to ride.
On your legs: Jeans are great. For slower rides any trousers/leggings of at least ¾ length will be fine. Shorts are very uncomfortable to ride in!
Anything else? Any casual top will be fine – t-shirt, shirt etc. It is also very, very sunny most days so sun cream and sunglasses are a good idea. We rent riding hats of all sizes, it is compulsory to wear a riding hat when horse riding.
